I have a 1995 Rheem Criterion II split unit in my home. It burns natural gas for heating. The blower motor was not coming on when I tried to start ac, but the fan in the condenser was coming on. I called a service tech out yesterday to troubleshoot. He diagnosed a bad board and jumpered something so that the fan is always on and ac and temperature are controllable from the thermostat. He said that this was a temporary solution until a board could be obtained. Today the company called and said it would be well over another $600 to install a new board. I can't really afford that right now, but do think I am capable enough to install a new board myself.

Here's what the tech wrote on the report:

Replace control board.
Remove double terminal on line 1 side of board and wire fan to OEM.

The number on the existing board is 62-24084-01. Doesn't appear to have any diagnostic leds on it. I have located what appears to be OEM replacement board 62-24084-82 for under $200 and what looks to be aftermarket 62-24084-82 for about $120. And of course eBay has 62-24084-01/-02 boards (probably used) for under $100.

My concern is I did not see what he jumpered to get the fan running continuously. Does anyone have ideas on what was jumpered? And where? I can see what must be the double terminal he installed but the wires on it don't look like "jumpers", more like they probably go somewhere else on the board. I'd like to give a try myself before committing another $600+ right now. Is it allowed to post pictures here? I could do so if allowed and needed. Thanks very much for any help.

Well I think my question was overlong and confusing. Sorry. I'm going to try adding a couple pics to hopefully clarify.

Here is the bottom edge of the board in my system. The center White, Blue, Red, Black and Yellow wires all come directly from the blower motor. Note that the Blue wire is on a double terminal along with a Gray wire.

Here's another picture of the bottom edge of the board that more clearly shows the label where the double connector of Blue and Gray is attached. They are on L1 terminal. The Gray wire does not come from the motor. It comes out of the box that the safety switch is in. That's the switch that shuts off the motor when you remove the lower panel.

My question is where are the Blue and Gray wires suppose to go originally? I am unsure if the tech moved them both or only one of them. Thanks for any help.

I bothered a couple of neighbors today that have homes built at same time as mine. I looked a two Rheem Criterion II units that were made in 1995 the same as mine. Neighbor 1 has an identical unit (same size and model) with identical board. Neighbor 2 has a larger unit and board is slightly different with no number on it. From looking at these neighbors units I have determined that the dark gray wire from safety switch always goes to L1. The white from blower motor always goes to Neutral. But the Black, Red, Blue, and Yellow wires from the blower motors don't go to the same terminals on the boards. Both neighbors say there units work fine.

Neighbor 1 has Yellow on M1, Blue on Heat, Black on Cool, and Red on Fan.

Neighbor 2 has Black on M1, Red on Heat, Yellow on Cool, and Blue on Fan.

Mine has Black on M2, Yellow on Heat, Red on Fan, and Blue doubled on L1 with dark Gray (see above posts).

So, does it even matter which of the Black, Blue, Red, and Yellow wires from the blower motor goes where so long as they go to M1 or M2, Heat, Cool, and Fan?
