My mom was diagnosed with shingles 7 days ago and has been on the anti viral medication since that day. I have had the chickenpox as a child but my husband and daughter have not had them ever. I heard from one person I have to get the shingles vaccination because the virus stays in your system after having chickenpox? I then was told by someone else when she is done with the anti viral medication, it would not transfer to anyone else?

I just need to know if I'm at risk first because I had to pick her up from the airport, also I just really need to know if after she finishes the medication, is it safe or can it still be passed to me and my family?

You have the virus already if you have had Chicken Pox. Shingles is less contagious than chicken pox and cannot be passed from person to person. However, the varicella zoster virus can be spread from a person with shingles to someone who has never had chicken pox. The unfortunate recipient might develop chicken pox, but not shingles.
