My washer washes but when it comes to draining or spinning it stops

Have you checked the motor drive coupling?

The part that your talking about is it the dial that you pull out to start your load?

No, the part I'm talking about is underneath, it connects the motor to the drum. Looks something like this.

Swaneks, that knob of which you speak very rarely is a problem. Does the machine make any noise when it should be spinning? Lid switch could be bad and need checked with a volt/ohm meter.

Often the coupling is bad, and you often can find pieces of it underneath and in the center of the machine of look with a flashlight.

P.S. It would help some to know the name and model number.
