I have a '98 Murray 30" 12hp riding mower. The transmission belt came off and needs to be replaced. Bought this mower used, so have no manual. First, is it worth the effort to try and do myself (pretty handy with a wrench:p ) or should I take it to a shop? Second, if I try to do it myself, how the heck do I get it apart. Have done searches for diagrams on the net with no luck. Any suggestions?

Model # 30577x8a (Searched the Sears site but this one must be too old)

Thanks,

Cheryl Ann

Should be fairly simple "should be" the belt goes to the engine and back to the transaxle, there will be a idler clutch engage pulley. If the pulley is flat the belt runs on the back of it, If it is "v" then it rides in it. Blade belts are much more difficult so give it a try.. . Nothing lost.

Thanks Don. That gives me some encouragement. Glad you didn't say "No way! Don't even attempt that!!!!!!!!!!!!!" :D I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Hi, If you go onto the murray site you can download the manual, find the model or serial number on your mower to input on their site, otherwise you cannot get anything, put the mower up on its side, try to have little or no petrol in it first otherwise it will spill out and leave the mower sit after putting back on to its wheels, it is easy to replace the drive belt, just on pulley from the engine to the back and loop around a clutch pulley, but very straight forward comared to the blade belt, I can do the blade belt with my eyes closed as my mower eats them.
