Hii,

Whenever I plugin any kind of usb flash drive to my gateway profile 5 machines running windows xp(sp2) the computer reboots automatically before detecting the drive. I think this problem started after installing sp2 in my machine. This problem is really frustating. Any kind of help or advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.

SP2 is certainly known for causing such problems but normally once it is installed, you are home free, with no further incidents later on. I would try contacting support for the manuafacturer of the drive to see if they have heard of such an experience with their device and maybe they can give you some type of resolution.

Hii,
Thank you for your prompt reply. But I have tried with different drives from different manufacturers. So I feel that doesn't work. I think it could be with the Microsoft. Please let me know if any updates.

Then you may try reinstalling windows over the top of itself. Just put the original windows CD in the drive and reboot the PC until you are prompted to "press any key to boot from CD'. This will start the windows reinstallation. You will not lose data during the process, however, make sure you are using a full version of a windows CD and not a system restoration CD which will most likely erase all your data.

Hi,
Here is a link:

This link explains what to do, with another usb flash drive problem.

Also, do you use System Restore? Like restoring your system to a previous state?

Here is a link explaining how to use System Restore; if you have already set a restore point before this started happening:

Using System Restore to re-set your computer to a previous date might help you.
Best of luck,
