Both of my toilets are over-filling the tank causing continuous running water until you vigorously jiggle the handle and the float pops up shutting the water off. Both are Kohler, 7-years old and the problem just started a month or so back around the same time. If I semi-vigorously push down/pull up the float several times, it seems to help temporarily, but always goes back to the original problem where the floats are not popping up when the water reaches a certain height.
I know nothing about any of this stuff - do I need to replace the guts? I took the cap off and flushed the inside per another post, but it had no effect. There was no washer to clean - just two plastic pieces that snap together and twist.
I guess I could try replacing the guts myself but I'm afraid of doing it wrong and/or opening a whole 'nother set of problems... Any ideas? Do these floats just kind of stop working correctly over time? Any quick/permanent fix? Replace the guts? Is this a reasonable do-it-yourself job or should I get a plumber? Thanks!
