Did the dentist give him a prescription for pain? If not, call the dentist and report this.

Then call the dentist who did the work. If he is not in the office today, there is probably an answering service or recording that will give you an emergency number.
Is your son's face swollen or black and blue?

Yes. It will subside. That was a lot of surgery all at once in a sensitive area. He should have no activity, and stay quiet. Make sure he takes all prescribed meds on time.

Don't worry about the solid food for now, just get the mouth healed. He should be on a nutritious soft diet for now.
Soup is good, soft lentils in it for protein is fine.

You or your son got no pages of after-surgery instructions?
Did he have general anesthesia -- or what?

That is not good. The nurse should have been instructed to give you information.
Now, back to what he wants to eat. Absolutely cannot be solids for another week. Any infection occurring by not following directions for his mouth is going to result in more care and more pain.
