I am renter with this refrigerator is it appropriate to ask for a new refrigerator to reduce electric bill. Isn't it expensive to replace door gaskets?

How old is it? Getting the old gasket off and the new one glued on is the hardest part, not the cost of the gasket. It's possible that a fridge with a worn out gasket is also old enough to be inefficient anyway. I replaced my parents fridge with a new one and the electric bill went down $35 month. Trouble is, when you are renting, the landlord doesn't have to provide a fridge that saves electricity, as long as the gasket isn't falling off. He might just glue a piece back on.

A gasket is usually cheap, but the important thing is to reseal the inside to outside mating surfaces with GE Silicone (clear) caulk. If you don't do this you will have major problems with air leaks, and this applies to all mating surfaces like an ice dispensing door hole. If you will fix it you will save a lot of electricity because the older R-12 refrigerators are much more efficient than the newer R-134a units. Make certain you clean the coils under the unit or your electric bill will be double what it would be normally. You need to wash out the coils with soap and water. It's best to spray them clean with a little water from a hose nozzle and vacuum up the water with a wet-vac.

SAVE on older models? My freezer on the bottom LG is so much more efficient than my old one. It practically never even runs. The old one ran at least half the time. How can this be, drtom?

How well are the gaskets sealing? That is probably the problem. The new gases cost about 33% more electricity to run because those gases are much less efficient. Why do you think the liberals want to take them from us? They are now trying to get the gases we have left in global summits this week. They will then have most freons outlawed. Then what will we do. They cause zero harm to the environment which is well known to everyone except them.
