Write down every time you spend, and notice what you are buying, then eliminate the fluff (and put that amount into savings).

We empty our pockets of change every evening and put it into a big blue piggy bank on the kitchen counter. It adds up fast.

Take recycling in for the money rather than throwing into the trash bin. We save about $150 a year that way. Also, make a plan for running errands that makes sense so you don't waste gas.

Don't eat out so often and certainly, if you do, skip the fast food places as that costs more than you may think.

A Starbucks coffee made at home costs me 10 cents - I figured it out. Including milk.
DON'T EAT OUT!
That's the number one culprit.
I keep track of all my charge card charges, then I enter them in a ledger in columns (food, gas and electric, car, pets, etc and the last one is MISC that I don't really need). I rarely use my checking account or cash, because I get 2% back, and I never ever pay interest on my card.
Once in a while I add up the columns to see what I average per month, and then per year.
If you need extra discipline, open a savings account and ignore it except to put nice round number deposits in it when you can, like $500.
Then dream about huge major dreams that you can't afford yet. That will keep you from spending it unless something drastic happens. Which of course it usually does... car breaks, teeth need work, you know...
