My 92 Subaru legacy needs a timing belt. The previous owner said that if the belt breaks the entire engine is ruined. I've been reading up on it and professional sources say that it's a non-interference engine. What does that mean for me and my timing belt.

2.2 motor? It's not an interference engine.

What does that mean for my engine though?

It means that if the timing belt breaks, the car will die out and not run... but you will not destroy the engine.

It means the pistons will not collide with the valves, thus destroying the engine, if the timing belt breaks or slips.
