I am a type 2 diabetic and take 1000mg of Metformin per day.
My blood sugar is under control with an A1c of 5.7.
I want to donate plasma, but I was not allowed, do to this medication.
I was told that in order to donate,my BS had to be under control without Metformin.

Can anyone explain why?
What effect does donating Plasma have on blood sugar?
Is there a danger involved?
Any links that discuss this topic?

TIA

I cannot find two sites that say the same thing - my late husband was diabetic and the blood bank would NOT allow him to donate.

Sometimes I think the rules are a little strange. I'm 5'4", about 110 pounds, and I was refused as being "underweight" - ?

My husband was told that every medication he takes would be "given" to anyone who receives his plasma and/or blood.

Let's see if I can find an expert.

I've heard that it has something to do with protein in the blood.
But unclear as to what.

The best place to get the answer to your question is your local American Diabetes Association.

You can find your local chapter here.
