This evening as we flushed a very loud noise started coming from the toilet, it stops as you flush but then comes back, it has been constant now for 5 hours, we can't sleep! The house is old but was refurbished 8 years ago, we have a septic tank (French) very old fashioned. There are two other bathrooms with no noise, any ideas please?

Only thing that moves in a toilet is the flush valve and flapper, both easy to replace. Do you have a float arm and ball or fluidmaster float type?

Hi there guys, thanks for your answers, still not sure what kind of toilet flush I have the lid seems to be welded on! Last night I just turned the water off at the mains and the noise stopped finally, I have just turned it back on again and so far no noise, the kids will use the bathroom in a minute and we'll see if it starts again. Thanks again, Lisa

Hey Lisa,
Toilet tank lids aren't welded on. They simply set on top of the tank. Try again. Tom

Ok I finally got the lid off it had been stuck on with some kind of glue. Anyway it seems to be the picture on right, but now the noise sounds like it is coming from the pipes and is louder in the shower unit. If I turn the water off at the main it stops but soon after we turn it back on it starts up again.

Try turning the angle stop under the toilet off when the noise starts. If the noise the problem's in the fill valve in the tank. You can either replace it or repair it, What's your pleasure? Back to you. Tom
