Hello,

I'm trying to file my state income tax for Missouri. Line 14 on MO-1040 long form talks about MO standard deduction or itemized deduction. How do I go about deciding which one can I use?

Last year, I had claimed standard deduction, however I got a notice of proposed changes from the state. It said that since I itemized deductions on my federal 1040-NR-EZ I need to do that here too.

Now, the reason I'm confused is because this year on my federal 1040 NR-EZ I'm taking Standard Deduction of $5950 since I'm from India (Last year I didn't know about the tax treaty so I didn't take that benefit). I know this "standard deduction" is filled on line 11 (under itemized deductions) on 1040 NR-EZ. So, my question is - Will this count as standard deduction or itemized deduction while filling out MO-1040 line 14?

Thanks.

It counts as a standard deduction on the Missouri return as well.
