I was looking at a cockapoo as a choice for myself and my husband. We both work, however, I am home a little more than he is, since my job is part time. A website said about not leaving them alone for too long. How long is that? Can they be home by themselves while we are at work? We have an 1100 sq ft home and a small fenced in backyard as well. If separation anxiety would be a major issue then what?

There are dogs that are more prone to get separation than others, but any dog is what you make it. If you socialize the dog, care for it properly, there is no reason it should suffer from any anxiety disorder.

When you get a puppy you should crate. The rule is 1 hour for every month of age in the crate. In other words, if you get a 2 month old puppy (8 weeks) it should only be left in the crate during the day for 2 hours max before being relieved. If you choose not to crate, which could be very dangerous for a puppy left alone, you still cannot leave it alone for more than one hour per month of age.

Are you planning on getting a puppy or an older dog? Have you made plans for who will care for the puppy while you're at work?

This might be a good time to make an argument for a pup that's going to be put down if no one adopts it instead of a designer breed.

There are, of course, rescued cockapoos and perhaps that is what OP is considering.
