Can I paper file my taxes after filing extension online?

I am planning to file an extension and then file taxes as "Married Filing Jointly". But my wife isn't in US now and I don't have her iTIN or SSN.
Can I file extension only on my name, SSN and then file the taxes as "Married Filing Jointly"?

Yes, as long as you are SURE that you eventually will receive a refund.
The BETTER alternative is to prepare the Form 4868 as a JOINT return, print it, neatly print in her SSN box "ITIN APPLIED FOR", then mail the Form 4868.
If you want to have proof that it was mailed and received, mail it CERTIFIED MAIL RETURN RECEIPT.
