My son was granted a public defender . I was out of state came to Mississippi to meet with his public defender he told us he would need five thousand dollars for investigative work I wrote him a check for a thousand to my son to SC and put him in school. He finally was offered a plea and charge with felony aggravated assault. Three years.
My son has never even had a speeding ticket , served 4 years in the Air Force and then 2 years Army National Guard he is 29. We paid the public defender around three thousand dollars and for what??

Hello C:

We can talk about the impropriety of a public defender charging money in another thread. It's outrageous, of course, but I'm not here to change the world. I'm here to help people like your son.

IF he hasn't accepted the plea deal YET, I CAN help... But, if he already plead GUILTY, then we're too late.

A public defender will appear in court and will look at the evidence. They do not have funds for investigation and for evidence research, they only represent normally. So to ask for money to do additional research would not be unheard of

Too bad you didn't just hire a private lawyer.
Demand an accounting of where the money went or you will sue.
