I am trying to wire the new OV490EA engine in my old Craftsman (Companion) tractor. The Ignition in the existing Tractor splits out the lighting wires already to the lights, but I have only two wires (red and Black) to connect from the ignition to a 4 wire harness (Red, yellow, red Green) on the new engine. How do I connect the wiring appropriately?

Hi,
Info on that particular Tecumseh engine is very difficult to find. The reason is that it was released about the time that Tecumseh sold the engine division. I did find four or five pieces of info in pdf format; all of which are to large to attach. Let us try some links.

"K&T Parts House Lawn Mower Parts and Chain Saw & Trimmer Parts" (http://www.mymowerparts.com/pdf/Tecumseh-Service-and-Repair-Manuals/)
Is a link to a manual page; choose the one in the middle that lists the OHH50 first.

http://www.tecumsehpower.com/
Is a link to the Tecumseh Power site; I suggest the Service Engines and Quick Reference Parts links on that page.

I question you named wire colors. The reason why is that I cannot see a reason for two DC voltage wire unless they actually go to a rectifier(or come from one.) I attach a picture from a page in the service manual.
Be glad to help, if I can.
Peace,
Clarke

Clarke;

Thanks, your links were helpful. Here is what I have with wires and the confusion to me is exactly where to hook up the two red wires...

Red with Diode - Battery charging wire (Connect direct to Battery circuit?)
Yellow wire - Lights
Green - Magneto Ground
Red wire from Fuel Solenoid connected to Carb. Where to connect the other end?

Both the Green wire and the red wire (without the Diode) come from terminals on the Fuel Solenoid. I am assuming this last red wire needs continuity in the Start and Run Switch positions, but turns off when the switch is off. Correct? How do you connect this wire?

Thanks.

Hi,
The green wire will be the ground to complete the circuit for the solenoid and the red wire needs battery voltage when in the Run and Start postions.
Peace,
