I saw this movie back in 1992 or 1993. Going on a fading memory here, so bare with me…

The film looked as though it had been made between the late 60s and the mid 80s. It was in color. A man has created these painting machines, that looked like giant steam pistons or arm shafts. At the tip of each one was a paint brush, and these machines would somehow paint to the sound of music. I remember him repeatedly playing Beethoven's 5th on a record player. I cannot recall how this all worked, but it seemed like the work of a brilliant madman. I remember him going through trial and error, the painting machines evolved from silver colored design to golden brass by the end of the film as he kept perfecting them, failure after failure. By the end of the movie, the whole design malfunctions and explodes, killing the man.

All the while, a little monkey (I believe a capuchin monkey) dressed in a uniform top (I believe red) is sitting in the corner of this room watching his master intently.

This is all I remember and I was about three or four years old at the time. It has been driving me crazy all these years as I cannot find even the name of this movie. I don't know if it was foreign or american, but it had to have been playing on one of the time warner cable stations in the early 90s. Please, if you have any idea, you'd be solving the most troubling mystery of my entire childhood. MANY THANKS!!
