I want to get a iPhone but I have to buy the phone myself and pay the monthly bill. What is a cheap phone company to switch to?

Would this be in Iran, South Africa, Afghanistan, The Congo or the USA?
Also that's like asking who makes a good Soda.
It all depends on what you need.. and how much you are willing to pay.

Also depends on what exactly.. you need the phone for... pricing varies according to need... and your need has to be determined
Such as how much of a data plan do you need... do you need 3G or 4G.. etc... etc.
YOU pay for what you get... the question is how much do you need... and hopw much are you willing to pay for...
Not to mention looking at the coverage charts for the area you travel in and see who offers the best coverage... which may not necessarily be the cheapest carrier.
There are a lot of things to consider when getting the best plan for your dollar. And it all starts with knowing how much you need... because the more you want, the more you will pay. And some carriers are better at certain things than other carriers are.
So what is bet for you might not be best for the next person.

There are no cheap cell companies offering the iPhone. I agree with Smoothy, you must mtch your needs with a cell plan.

I recently saw a newscaster lady on TV that had to replace her iPhone cause she dropped it from the news desk and it broke. So she bought another and accidentally dropped that one too and it broke. Finally she bought a Blackberry (the phone she now had during the newscast she was complaining about the iPhone being so delicate) she threw it across the network stage and a guy picked it up and it still worked. I see people all the time who buy a super slim iPhone just to put it into a fat ugly protective case. I consider the iPhone a piece of junk, they wouldn't even replace it for her so she slammed the company on the air. Good for her.

Sounds like she is quite clumsy. Lets try to answer the question being asked

The best option I think you need to go with is with T-Mobile, there getting the iPhone 5 April 12th. To me, having a wireless provider with unlimited data, because there is no point in getting a smartphone when the brian is limited to how much information its able to get.
Sprint has unlimited data, but with the iPhone 5 it will be 3G service, and at the same time Sprint service is very slow and I would not get it, I would go with T-Mobile because the speeds are fast and its truly unlimited data with no data caps or throttle (meaning not speed reduction)
