Hi everyone hope someone can help me & my brother. My mum wants to swap her 2 bed council flat for a 1 bedroom. If she does this it will make me & my 16 yr old brother homeless. I am 17. Thanks for your help

Parents often say things jokingly or out of frustration. Are you and your brother giving her a hard time? And she can't wait until you are 18 (a lot of parents do)?

The council probably won't even let her have a one bedroom until you are both 18. And then they probably will require it! I don't know the rules, but once you are 18, you are an adult. You need to be thinking about that 'homeless' situation in advance, since it's not so far away. What kind of work you want to do to support yourself, what training you are getting, what kinds of jobs you can get this summer, how much it costs to be on your own.

Where? Actually if you are no longer "legal minors" she can do this -

So where does mom plan on sending you?

True, we need your location. You asked under Family Law, so I shouldn't just guess.

What is the legal age of adulthood where you live? Many of us are in the US and here a parent is responsible for their child until 18, so can't throw them out until then. Even then, I suppose they would have to legally evict their adult child.

What is a "council flat" and who is the council? This is new terminology to me. I do understand a flat is what we call an apartment but am unfamiliar with the council part of the term.

'What is a "council flat" and who is the council?'

A UK term for a gov't subsidized apartment, run by a local council.

Is part of her subsidy based on having two minor children? If so, wouldn't she loose part of her benefits if she threw you out of the house?
