Dodge decota sport v-6 motor will start and drive but won't idle without giving it some gas. The check engion light is on but will go out for a couple of days or so and come back on. I thought it my be the gas cap so I replaced it with no results. I tried some higher octane gas went out for a couple days but come back on. It is getting to be more frequent that it won't idle by it self.

I have about 235000 miles on the truck. When the computer was put on my truck it said catalytic converter and or O2 senser, however the ideling problem didn't exists at that time. I was just wondering if there was a comon problem like crank or cam positioning sensors that could be bad but I believe the motor would not run if this was the case. There is really no loss of power while driving and that leads me to believe that the exhaust is OK. Is the problem I'm having due to a sensor?

Could the throttle cable just need adjusting? This would increase the idle rpm.

You may also want to clean the throttle plate and throttle body. If the problem persists, check/replace the Idle Air Control Valve (IACV). Afterwards, clean the air box and replace the air filter.
