In the United States everyone has a social security number - it's a number that is used to identify each tax payer. Perhaps there is something similar in the UK? If so, you might be able to use this information to track down his employer if he is still working, and potentially his mailing address.

Otherwise I can suggest that you find out as much other information about him through his family as you can, such as what he did for a living. For example, if you knew he worked in carpentry, you could contact associations of carpenters and find out if he is listed in their directories.

There are, of course, private investigators who know all the tricks and if you have the means to hire one, they might be able to find him for you.
