Hi,

I have just entered US in June 2012 as this is my first year I have too much confusion while filling up W4.

I came to US on H1 with my wife and kid on dependent visas H4.

When I came to US my employer asked me to put 1 as "Total number of allowances you are Claiming" question 5. Also my employer asked me to mark myself as "Single" even though I am married and have one kid.

Now I have changed my employer, so I need to again fill up W4 form. I was confused should I fill up the form the same way as earlier employer asked me to do? Like putting "Single" and total allowance as "1"?

If I go from allowances A to G in the form my total allowances are coming to 4.

Can anybody please help me in resolving this query? Its very urgent for me as I need to give this form to my employer today itself.

Thanks,
Jenish

If your new employer allows it, claim MARRIED status with THREE allowances (one for you, your wife and child).

However, do NOT worry about it, because the W-4 only dictates what is withheld for federal income taxes. You will pay the correct tax when you file your return, and get any over-payment as a refund.
