View Full Version : Dismay... what to do about linoleum installation?

I am a bit dismayed. In 2005, a DIY job was completed installing linoleum on our kitchen floor. Luann was used to install a new sub floor and all seams and staple indentations were filled and smoothed to perfection. We had a friend that once worked for a flooring company install linoleum for us... first mistake. After the installation, a knot the size of a 50 cent piece showed through. After a month or so, ripples in the linoleum along the seams began to raise. Long story short, I learned and lesson and lived with it for 7 years and had no warranty for the work. Now, after remodeling the laundry room connected to the kitchen, I decided I wanted the linoleum to match in both rooms and was extremely happy that I would now be able to get rid of this gone array DIY job in the kitchen and have fixed… professionally this time. Upon inspection from a local flooring company, my concerns about the knot and ripples were made known. I was told that the previous installer probably let the glue dry too much before laying the linoleum which caused the ripples and that there had to be some kind of particle left on the floor under the linoleum that caused the knot... but was assured that when the old linoleum was pulled up, the sub floor would be inspected and I should be prepared to pay for a new sub floor also, if needed, as this cost was not figured in the original estimate. With this said, I watched as the old linoleum was removed and yes, there was a particle under the linoleum that caused the knot. The old linoleum pulled off all in 1 sheet! I was told by the sub contractors that my sub floor was in GREAT SHAPE and there was no need for a new sub floor. I know nothing about floors, so I accepted the word of the sub contractors. Once the installation of the new linoleum was completed, the knot still existed and I could see "floor seams" in spots where the sub floor was joined together. I was told by the sub contractors that they had to "patch" the spot where the knot was. NOT HAPPY! I had the owner of the flooring company come and inspect the job. He tells me that the floor has a little "give" and there must be a "void" underneath the sub floor causing this; that it could be fixed but at my expense! Hello! I relied on the expertise of the sub contractors to know whether I needed new sub floor; if I did, I was ready & willing to pay the extra expense to have it laid. Now, a day later, there is a patch about 12" x 12" that did not adhere to the floor. You "hear" the difference when walking across it; this is how I noticed it. I am so dismayed. I paid 30% down before the job began. The floor company owner says they can fix the cosmetics, but have to charge me for it. I feel the sub contractors should have known any cosmetics before laying the linoleum. I am so dismayed. I waited 7 yrs to get rid of a knot and ripples that are very noticeable at my front kitchen door. Am I being over dramatic? I just don't want to get ripped off as a consumer and I expect to get what I pay for. Any advice? Much appreciated!
