I have a purebred GSD who is 16 months old. Her ears are floppy and only stand up on occasion and one at a time. Apparently, her ears were taped at six months but with no success.
I read about magnets/ weights being put on a dogs ears for them to work harder to get them up, even at this age.
Can you tell me where I would get magnets and if this is viable?
Thanks

It's not viable.

Magnets are available in most stores. But this won't work.

Why is it so important to you that your dogs ears stand up? Is your dog a show dog?

Edit:

At 16 months, if your dogs ears aren't up, they never will be. It's too late to do anything about them.

If the dogs ears were taped before he was done teething 4-6 months of age, then they were taped too soon, which is likely why they're not standing now.

Too late. Your dog will have to live with floppy ears.

I have heard that rubbing in an upwards motion on the inside of the pinna will help strengthen the cartilage. Its what a breeder has told me.. whether it works, I don't know.

I would think at 16 months, her ears are what they are. Ears are made of cartilage, not muscle, so the theory that magnets will cause the ear to want to work to stand up is not true.

I think you are stuck with a floppy eared GSD.. I know it sucks, trust me, I know! My purebred GSP has small, tulip ears. They are a major fault in the breed.. He would look gorgeous with big, floppy ears. But his ears make him. It fits his personality. So maybe your floppy eared GSD will have a unique personality as well.
