Color doesn't lift color. So, your regrowth, or "roots" having no color on them lifted, but your black ends didn't. They just grabbed a bit of the tone of the red. You can deposit Brown on all of that, but you will likely have warm underlying tones from the red. Your regrowth will take to the Brown, but will more than likely fade very quickly due to trying to lift to red. When you try to lift your hair, the cuticle of your hair is opened by the chemicals to allow the color to deposit, therefore making it easy for the color to escape, or fade. Best thing would be to go to a reputable salon. Semi permanent color would be the way to go, and if possible, take your root a level darker to compensate for having lifted it. Also, the "cooler" or ashier the color the better to cancel out any unwanted warmth i.e.. red/pink.

You will have to choose a brown as dark as your ends, because again, color doesn't lift color. At a salon, they could lift the black up with lightener and deposit the desired brunette.
