I have a burnt oil/gasoline smell coming from my kitchen faucet only on the cold setting. The smell isn't there in any other faucets throughout the home, and the smell goes away after about 3-5 seconds in a glass. The kitchen is one of 2 lines inside that skips the water softener as well as 2 outside. The other lines straight from the well do not have that smell. What should be my next step? Should I be worried?

Run some water from the other line that skips the water softener and run some water from the "2 outside" lines. Run enough water from the outside lines to get the questionable water to flow, OK?

Check these lines out for the odor and report back, OK?

No odor. I ran the water and got nothing in any other line.

I do have a filter attached to the kitchen faucet if that could be a possible issue.

Could be that your filter needs to be changed. Maybe the charcoal used in many of these filters is leeching into the water.

Otherwise maybe your well is contaminated and the contaminant is more noticeable in the kitchen because it's not going through the softener.

I would recommend that you have the water tested from the faucet and also at the well.

The plan is to change the filter in the morning.

I am hoping that is the case because the 3 other lines that completely by pass the softener are clear of any smell at all.

Also, the water is clear and the smell goes away in a cup in about 3 seconds tops.

I changed the filter and it was clear of a smell for a week. Today the smell returned. I called DuPont and they want the filters to do testing. As soon as the filter is out the smell goes away. Should I still get my water tested or because when the filter is removed the smell goes away it was likely the filter?
