View Full Version : Washer/dryer installation?

I am very interested in a certain older home that has been remodeled. There is weirdness, though. The remodelers installed washer connections where the refrigerator is clearly supposed to go, and the utility closet has a dryer connection (about 15 feet away). I would either want to put the washer/dryer in the utility closet or in the garage, but would have to install new plumbing in either. I have no idea how expensive that is. Could someone give me a rule of thumb? The existing plumbing in the kitchen is about 15 feet away from the closet and about 25 feet away from the garage. If I decided on the garage, the dryer connection would have to be installed there, too.

Either way will be a hassle and both options are major surgery. But to move the washer next to the dryer in the closet would be cheaper since it doesn't involve rerouting the electricity and the outside vent. Still, more then just the plumbing trade will be called in to move the washer to the closet. You will have to tear up the wall and perhaps the floor as well to move the drainage and water. Not only that but once the drainage is moved you will have to vent the washer trap with a vent through the roof or revent back in the attic. To give you even a ballpark figure on how much it would cost I would have to be on the job site, but I can tell you this, it won't be cheap.
Good luck and let me know what you decide. Tom

I saw this one, but decided to leave it for Tom. With his Florida location he didn't think to mention a laundry in the garage is a poor idea in the North. Trust me, we have struggled with one since 1977.
