Is there a house there now?

Is there a vent pipe sticking out of ground?

If u know the layout of old house and there is no house there now, u can test for the tank with a drive rod. This is a piece of rod about 4 ft long that is pushed into ground. The top of tank is usually only down about a foot.

You can run a camera and follow it, You can have company run rod and follow it with electronic locator and also with metal detector.

The government office that approves septic and fields, will have a map or drawing showing the location.

If u can see waste line in basement, there should be a vent pipe on outside of house where pipe goes out.

If not use a rod starting at location where pipe goes out and drive into ground about every 2 feet going away from house.

Or u can do as Fr Chuck suggests.

The ground where I used to live was always too hard for the rod, but it does work well in many places.

Also while not correct, I had one home I bought did not even have a tank. It had a pipe that turned out to pour into a old "pond". The water from kitchen and tub, emptied into a area behind a flower bed.

So nothing is surprising when buying a older home or property where there was a old home

You can run a camera and follow it,I like that idea Chuck. How aboitb ground pentatrating radar? You could also run a snake through the clean out, When you can't push it any farther you have hit the tank inlet. That will give you a idea of how far out it ia. Good luck, Tom
