I have a situation. Very difficult I think. I was awarded custody of my 5 yr old son this past year. Here about 2 months ago, I was also, legally, able to move from Tennessee to virginia. Keep in mind, my sons father : does not have a drivers license, does not stay in one living location for long periods if time, has been through a mental hospital several times, has attempted suicide 3x, has a history of drugs & violence, his only source of income is ssi, & the list goes on. My sons father has limited supervised visitation rights a few times out of the year. I am wanting to join the military. In va, I have a lady friend who has helped me & my son start fresh. She has taken me & my son in as her own. I trust this woman with my life, as she herself has all 5 of her kids. I want to join the military. As it stands here written, can I turn over rights of my son to her until I get out of bootcamp & ait? Will this conflict in va state court? Does my sons father, in the state (health, income, stability) that he is in fight this & win if I was to turn rights over? I need this info & whatever else I can get please.

No, you cannot turn over your rights. However, you can give her temporary guardianship while you are in camp or deployed.

The father can fight it, but based on what you say, I doubt if he would and doubt even more that he would succeed.
