My grandmother died in 196? My mother had paid the property taxes till she died 5 yrs ago. I am doing the same thing as she. I want to know what I have to do to get the property (there is no house) in my name.

When your grandmother died, who inherited the property? Was her estate probated? Who's name is the property in now?

The first step in gaining title is to determine who should legally have title now.

If mother and grandmother died without a will, they died 'intestate,' and who gets what goes by state law. Paying the taxes doesn't entitle someone to land if there were other immediate family members who might have inherited, going back 2 generations (although it should help). Consider letting a lawyer handle it, unless you are the only child and so was your mother.

Where is this? Have you done anything other than pay the taxes like mowing, maintaining the property?
