Every time I ask for the money he says he will pay soon . I don't want to put the lien because I know my relation with my wife will be effected . But now we are separated can I go fr it or it's too late .

Four years after the work was done is way too late to file a mechanic's lien in every state that I know of.

And, again depending on the jurisdiction, you might have a statute of limitations problem as well, making a lawsuit also out of the question.
