It's OK to care, there's no issue with this question at all. Not to mention, it's probably just best to straight up ask him, but be friendly about it, if you guys are still getting along with each other.

No don't bother. If you're over him and he's not it will be awkward. If you're not over him then asking him could possibly lead to embarrassment if he treats you like a mad person for thinking he was looking at you. Because he's not going to be like 'yea I still have feelings for you I was staring'
