Hi. I’m currently going through a custody battle... please help!

It all started on the night of 7/28/2012. My son was involved in a suspicious accident in witch he had first degree burns to his genital area (scrotum). This resulted on my son being transported into the Emergency Room by the mother.
At the hospital the nurses and pediatrician concluded that the official story provided by the mother was not consistent with the actual burns on my son. Then Hospital administrators reported the incident to the local Police Department and Child Protective Services. Then cps took custody of my son in till, I the Father was contacted by the mother on the morning of the next day (7/29/2012), and rushed to the hospital to recover my son. Once at hospital I was able to contact cps and check on the health of my son and his burn. Then I had to report myself to them as the father. Once that was established, House check, and background check where put in to place and then cleared/past.
While the doctor/pediatrician expressed his concerns, regarding the story given by the mother, and the actual burn, I was cleared by cps. My son was released to my placement by cps. There is still an on going investigation regarding what really happen to my son by CPS and The local Police Department.
Under those circumstances, I decided to file for Custody of my son and request a hearing due to my concerns regarding my son's safety under the mother's placement... There is a hearing scheduled and I'm trying to get as much information, help and advice as to what I should do next. Meanwhile my son has been staying under my supervision and has recovered and began to get a lot healthier and happier. I intend to keep it that way and I'm seeking Good advised as to what I can do to show and convince the court that my son is better off with me his father...
Please help! Any advice is good; I still have not hire a lawyer and I don't think I can afford much legal advice...

Note= me the father have never been in a relationship or married with the mother.

Thank you!
Sincerely: A worried Father

Where is this happening? Country, State?

You will fare much better with an Attorney.

This confused me - "Note= me the father have never been in a relationship or married with the mother."

ANY question on law needs to include your general locale as laws vary by area.

How old is the child? What was the mother's explanation? Why did the mendical professionals question the explanation.

Was this an isolated incident of the mother's care.
