I have a large fridg. Brand freezer that looks like a refrigerator style. It stopped working while I was on vacation and all inside had to be disposed of. We had a storm and power outages here while I was on vacation. Do not know if this had something with freezer not working now or not. The light goers on on the outside of the freezer but doesn't freeze. Does it pay for me to try to call a co. in to repair a freezer that is about 7 years old? Or dispose of this unit and get another one.

Personally... if you had food rotting in it because of a power failure you will never get the smell completely gone as it will permiate the insulation.

It MIGHT be reparible... assuming compressor wasn't fried with a surge or repeateed surges. But the odor will linger.

Personally... if it were me I'd replace it with a new one.

You can clean it out and get rid of the odor with Chlorox. Clean the drain pan under it along with the coils, too. You remove the cover to the coils, if there is one and clean with Chlorox there, too. It's probably a simple fix, but you need a whole house surge protector to keep this from happening again. Square-D makes a good one, along with other companies. I have never seen anything fail from a surge after one of these was installed. HUD houses are required to have them.
