Before a join the military I had a fling. The women at the time was 5 years my senior she became pregnant with twins. I began to pay child support which she refused to cash it was all done through the court system. When I explain to her that I was not intrested in getting married because I was only 18 at the time and not ready but wanted to help support and be a father to my children. She was not happy and did everything she could to try and keep me away. Being away 6 months out of the year made it harder. When the children were about 5 I found out from a family friend that the system was going to take the kids away from her for being unfit. I took leave flee back home got a lawyer and went to court to try and get the children. After paying almost 2 grand in lawyer fees the courts said because I was in the navy and was out to sea so often I was not fit to be a parent to my children to make matters worse the grandmother who was fighting against me had submitted papers to have my rights as a patent taken away. The courts not only told me I could not raise my children because I served my country but that all my rights were taken away. I would not have any say or be able to visit them as I did when I was in town. Here it is 8 years later Im married and have a baby boy and have moved on with my life, a fame member back home informed me that the grandmother is going around telling people she is taking me for child support because she feel it's not right that I'm raising my child and living happy. My question is can I be made to pay this same person who had my rights taken away child support?

If the courts terminated your rights then your not responsible for paying child support. Also the courts had no right to declare you unfit based upon your service for this country. (thank you for doing that).

What did your lawyer say when they spoke of the findings because your in the military ?

My lawyer said that it was unfair to not only say I was unfit but not give me a chance to try and be the parent they would need. The judge said he had to do what was best for the children and moving from place to place as the navy would require is not giving them the stability that children need. Yes on my part it was wrong to stay away but given the choices I had there was not much I could do .

Sounds like a very liberal court and a very bad attorney.

You need to check paper work, if you merely got visits taken away ( no visitation order) then your rights were limited, not taken away, and she can come after child support. And you can refile for visits anyway.

You needed to have appealed this back then, since the verdict was illegal in my view point.

Thanks, I read the papers over a million times and yes all my rights were taken away. I filed appeals after but didn't get any help there. Before I knew it I had to report back to my ship
