My boyfriend was arrested for possession of less than 30 grams of marijuana. He went to court the following morning and was told he has 365 days of unsupervised probation. He also has to make another appearance in court. Can they sentence him to jail time or fine him after he's already been told he's on probation?

No. However a sentence the NEXT day is VERY unusual. Maybe they said he'd GET unsupervised probation at the next hearing...

OP left out an important detail. Could it be that he pled guilty that next morning and was therefore sentenced to some sort of suspended sentence with probation?
