I have a 2002 ford escape when I put truck in "D" it just acts like it is in nuetrual but if I put it in "1" or "2" it drops in to gear and I can manually shift it into 3 and over drive once moving fast enough but it will not shift automatically in "D".

It may be a faulty or misadjusted Transmission Range Sensor (TRS).

Were is the TRS on the transmition? How do I replace it? Also a little more info I have been working on it and found that when I put it in drive I think it is going straight to 3rd gear.

It's right on top of the transmission, under the hood. Look for the transmission shift linkage--it bolts on top of the TRS. The dealer will likely use a adjustment tool to align it.

If it was bad would it cause the problem I am having. The truck was working great two days ago then this happen. I probably will not take tis to a dealer as I put the motor in this truck about 1.5 years ago. Anyway any suggestions on how to test this I should be able to get any tools I need.

Best to read up on the TRS on the internet and then use your best judgment.

Did you find an answer to the problem? My escape did the exact thing you described today... was it the TR sensor, or something else? I was reading about a transmission band that was very costly.

I had a question, did you hit a bump when this happened? My wife was driving when this occurred and she said she went over a speed bump kind of hard. I was wondering if it just wore out on you or can I blame her for it ; )

Not sure if the bump caused the problem. But I just had to pull my trans as my friend drove the truck and the problem I am having is in the trans. Evedently Ford in the crative shifting for transmitions uses a pressure geared coupling system (this pushes each gear in and out automatically) that alows the transmition to up shift and down shift when in drive but when you manualy shift the transmition from 1 to 2 then to D the trans will work other wise the trans stays in third gear even when you come to a stop. So it is not supposed to cost much to fix the problem but the trans needs to opened to fix. (not a fun job to drop that trans but doable and labor intensive so this is where your cost is) If you're not set up with some good tools you may consider finding a garage.
