This is over a very bad reference from 1 employer, which is completely false, and I can prove it, Also the same person is using at least 2 different reference, and their may well be a third one, depending on whether, I am going or public or private sectors.
Another from a second part time role I was doing is the exact opposite. I know that this reference has cost me jobs
Cheers

If you can prove a false statement was made and that this statement cost you a job, then file suit.

You may sue, if you have evidence that is acceptable in court. But most likely legal aid will not do it, That will depend on the area In Atlanta for example, legal aid will do child support and child custody, but even on things like bankruptcy, they will merely help with paper work, not actual court appearance. And they do not do law suits and the such.
Most legal aid is so over work, they only do family law. But you can ask.
