Depends on what area of the country you live but you should be able to look in the yellow pages and find a doc who specializes in pain treatment. I am in the Northeast and we have several excellent doctors in that area.

Have you talked with your primary care doctor? If they are not comfortable managing chronic pain, they often know the local clinics that specialize in chronic pain or those that have a chronic pain specialists. If that isn't a possibility for you you could contact the help line at your insurance company for a list of in network providers that specialize in chronic pain. As an absolute last resort there is the yellow pages, often they list physicians and surgeons that deal with pain, a bit more of a crap chute as you would have to make multiple calls to find the right type of provider.
As to what to look for. Look for a provider who will look at the whole picture, not just one quick to hand you a prescription for a narcotic. Management of chronic pain can be difficult and often encorporates life style modifications, improving coping skills, medications (Narcotic and non narcotic) as well as other therapies (massage, acupuncture, physical therapy etc.) Don't be offend if part of the evaluation asks about symptoms of depression. Depression is often under treated in the management of chronic pain.
