Our six month old puppy is now dry in the house, but still poops inside. He is outside most of the day with our older dog. In desperation, we have taken to feeding them both once a day only - in the morning. How can the puppy still have poop inside him at night? On the rare occasion it is clean downstairs in the morning, he poops outside as soon as I take him - and I praise him greatly. We don't want to get a crate. What can we do to ensure he doesn't need to go to the toilet in the night?

Perhaps the older dog is telling the pup that the yard is his territory? Have you watched them interact when the pup does poop outside?
If you don't want to buy a crate, create a smaller area for him at night, and if that doesn't work, keep making it smaller. Crating is actually the easiest way to train a pup, who doesn't want to poop where he sleeps.

Thank you very much for your reply. I don't think there's a problem with Freddie (our older dog). When I take them out in the morning Freddie goes shooting off in one direction and Wally and I trot down the garden path in another. How do you create a small area? Do you mean by pushing furniture round him?
