My 5 week old kitten that I just got yesterday may 17th gets mildly aggressive with his bottle when I feed him and I dropped a piece of cooked hamburger last night and when I tried to get it from him he was a ferocious tiger and almost tore apart my arm is he too young to worry about this behavior or how do I properly correct it?

It sounds like he isn't getting enough to eat. Why do you have such a young kitten? He should still be with his mother.

Exactly... they should NOT be separated from their mother for at least 7 weeks.

The people I got him from had him almost weaned so I started him back on the bottle because I agree he should not have been separated I was going to give him 3 bottles a day along with about an 8th of a can of wet food is that not enough

If I'm correct, he should be fed about every 3 hours rather than just 3 times a day.

Like J_9 said, that's not nearly enough. You are starving the poor thing. I'd rip up your arm too.

Ok and I have no clue how much he was getting before I got him he does eat the wet food should I continue to offer it, or wait a week and keep him on just formula

If he's away from his mother, he needs BOTH wet food and formula, but you are going to have to step up on the feedings if you want a happy healthy cat.

Would you feed your human baby only 3 bottles a day? I think not.

He should be gently and carefully bottle fed every three hours -- kitten milk from the pet store, NOT cow's milk (or you'll kill him). He can eat small portions of canned kitten food three to five times a day. And what about during the night? Is someone feeding him then too?

Does he use the litter box correctly?

I will step up feeding and is the amount of wet food OK I give about an 8th of a can 4 times a day

Wondergirl

Does the kitten eat it all? What do you do with the leftovers on the plate or in the can?

Sezii

I fed him at about midnight with the bottle then he slept until about 6 am and I gave home some wet food and then at about 815 he had another bottle he is still learning how to use the litter box

Wondergirl

Does he eat all you give him, or are there leftovers on his plate?

Sezii

I make a full bottle and he eats about a quarter and he finishes the wet food at every feeding

Wondergirl

Is this special kitten milk (not cow's milk)? What do you do with leftover milk?

Cats don't gorge themselves like dogs do. Once cats are full, they will stop eating. Give him a little more canned food to see if he is still hungry.

Sezii

Yes it is kitten milk and I refrigerate the left overs as directed on the container

Wondergirl

Do you warm up the milk under warm water from the faucet before you give it to the kitten again?

So give him a little more canned food next time. Okay?

Sezii
May 18, 2012, 10:35 AM
Yes I make sure its very slightly above body temp

Wondergirl

And what's happening with the litter box situation?

Sezii
May 18, 2012, 10:43 AM
He hasn't peed anywhere except the box but he has pooped 2ce outside of it one on my blanket and once behind my bedroom door

Wondergirl

DO NOT yell at him when he does it wrong or push his face in it. Simply clean up and put the poop in the litter box and put him in it too so he can smell that there's a connection. Cats are very smart, so don't punish him and make him confused.

Sezii

Ok I showed it to him (didnt shove his face in it) told him no not yelled then put him in his box

Wondergirl

Be careful with the yelling. That usually is useless. He's not a dog who might respond to a sharp "No!" Are you with the kitten a lot, so you might recognize the signs of wanting to go potty before he does it? If so, gently pick him up and put him in the box. Otherwise, pick up the poop and him and silently put them together in the box so he can smell the poop and the litter together. You could even gently take his feet and scratch litter over the poop.

He scratches really well and he went to the box on his own to pee and yes I'm home almost 24/7 he's an amazing kitten he loves to cuddle and he's the most gentle player I've ever had but that's why his aggression concerned me

He was very hungry and wanted that hamburger.

Plus, kittens play-fight. That's why he should still be with him mom and siblings. They learn how to play-fight gently with each other.

I guess if I was hungry and some one showed me a t bone I would act the same

I don't know if any one will answer this but I wanted to put in an update that my kitten is much less reactive over food and was wondering, if anyone had some ideas on toys to make-give my kitten from average house hold items because he is wanting toys and all my money went to his formula until payday

Store-bought toys are never as much fun as homemade ones!

Wad up a newspaper page and toss it a short distance across the floor. He will chase it and bat it around.

Cats love empty boxes, so lay one or two (shoe box or small packing box because he is small) on their sides with the flaps open so he can jump on top and hide inside. If you use a large box, cut round and square holes in the sides so he can go in and out that way. Brown paper grocery bags are good too to play in, but don't use plastic ones (choking/suffocating hazard).

On the top of milk gallons is a blue plastic ring. Remove that and let him play with it like a hockey puck. Or securely tie several together.

Put several dry beans or marbles inside an empty pill bottle that has a childproof cap and let the kitten roll it around on the floor.

Always be sure a toy is safe before kitty gets it--no loose strings or small pieces that he can swallow or allowing him to be too high up (climbing your drapes) in case he falls.

He doesn't really bat things around but I didn't even think of boxes he LOVES to pounce on things like the blanket and my feet

Take an old white cotton sock and stuff it with its mate. Close up the end (sew, not staple) and make a fake kitten out of it that he can pounce on. I'd add some dried catnip to the inside before sewing it closed.

I have a question I'm taking him with me to work tomorrow (I work at a vet clinic) but he puked on Friday night I'm assuming because he got into a small bit of cream cheese but he puked again earlier today and all he's had is formula and wet food

Wondergirl

Cream cheese is made with cow's milk -- forbidden to kittens.

Cats puke a lot -- what did he throw up?

Sezii

The night that he snuck the cream chesse out of the trash he puked up his formula and a couple pen head size, clumps of cream cheese then when he puked in the morning 2 days later it was his wet food and formula and my work told me switching formula can cause some puking and I don't know what the previous owner had him on
