I am considering replacing an electric range with a 30" cooktop and 30 inch wall oven. The range currently has a 40A 240v breaker. The kw's for the cooktop and oven are 8.4 and 4.1 respectively. Using info from Table 220.55 of the NEC - circuit for a 15kw range would need to be rated at 8kw plus 5% added for each kw over 12.
In my case this comes to 8.04kw. 8040w divided by 240v equals about 34A. Since the circuit needs to be sized at 125% for a continuous load I come up with 42.5A. This being said do I need to increase the size of my breaker to 50A?
