I have a BFA degree in Interior Design. I have a passion for art history/architecture and would love to share my passion through teaching. However, I'm not sure if I want to teach at the middle school, high school or college level. Therefore, I'm stalling on getting started on the process. I understand that there are different requirements for the levels in education in which one teaches. I live in Illinois and I'm open to going back to school to get a Masters in Art History or Master or Art in Art Education. Can you let me know of your thoughts in terms of, Is there an alternative route to becoming an art teacher? Is going back to school for a Masters worth it? What is it like teaching middle school, high school and college. I'm in my early 40's I need to be sure this is the right career change. Thank you in advance for your help!

I too am in Illinois (west of Chicago) and, depending on where you want to teach, yes, a master's would be very valuable Even at the primary and middle school levels, master's are encouraged. For community college and higher, you would definitely need a master's and even a Ph.D.

Which county are you in? Have you talked with any school district superintendents or county dept. of education staff?

Teaching is more than just a career. Which do you love more; art or students? This might help you determine what level you should consider teaching. You might want to also consider attending a teacher job fair at some of the state universities, the job market in Illinois teaching is at its lowest point in 40 years.

Is it worth it, it all depends on what you value worth at. If you want to use the money to earn more money, got to tech school and become a plumber or welder. It costs less than a Masters degree and you will always earn more money than teaching.

You teach if and it should be only if, you have a love and passion for teaching. You will never be the most paid person on the block and not normally a member of the country club.

If you want to be a teacher you should go get your Masters as it allows many more doors and slightly higher earnings.
