Bank of America bought MBNA which we had a cc debt that was not paid off - we did make small monthly payments for serveral years. BOA decided out of the blue somehow to send both of us a 1009C for the same amount about 3K about the orignial debt. The actually sent 3 for the same account. One with my husbands SS, one with mine, and one in my name with a SS # of 0000. I have tried to talk to BOA but no one can find any data on this debt.Say the debt was 10K we got 3 cancellations for 10K each on the same card account

My first question is can they send 3 and claim 3 times the debt forgiven?

I called the # on the form but no one supposedly can help me. They sent me to "legal" where no one can help me either. Supposedly someone was "emailed" and they will be able to help me because they are further up the food chain. That was 3 days ago.

First, take a careful look at each form, as I suspect one is an original and the other two are CORRECTED forms. If that is the case, then you were issued only ONE Form 1099-C.
