I have been sent a letter from the owner of a retail unit based under our private road asking for the road/ their roof to be repaired as it is causing water damage into the shop. They have give 3 quotes for £60k, £26k and £12k. I would like to know if I'm responsible for this? If so would the cost be shared equally between the residents? If this is the case it doesn't seem fair if you live in a studio flat on a low income and your 2 neighbours are hotels. Any advice would be welcome. Many Thanks

A few questions need to be addressed before we can respond:
What, if anythng, is it that might make you (apart from the fact that you apparently live on the road) responsible for maintaining this "private road"?
Is the road an easement belonging to you and others?
What state or country are you in?

AK asks some good questions. I am still wondering how a road repair is related to their roof.

Another very good question.
But OP did say that the subject premises is under the road. I can't quite visualize how that could be, but maybe that has something to do with it. :)
