Going old school.

We’ve all been busy, and I for one miss the chats. The peeves thread is great, but we need to go old school. We need to go back to our roots.

No gimmicks, no castle, because it’s just not the same without Starby, and others. No coffee house, nothing like that. Let’s just connect, talk like we used to. All newcomers are welcome. All long time members are welcome. Everyone is welcome! Newbies, owners, experts, you name it. Just come and join in.

Being friends (because of this site) is what made us great. Are we losing that? I don’t think we have, but I think we need a reminder.

So anything goes on this thread. If you want to talk about what’s bothering you, you know we’re all here to listen. If you just want to tell us what you did today, we’d all love to hear it, I know that for a fact. If you just want to goof around, tell a few jokes, get back in touch with the people on this site that you care about, then go for it.

We need to remember why we’re here. We need to remember why we stayed to begin with. It’s never been the layout of the site. It’s never been graphics. Changes have been hard, but in the end we stay because of the people. It’s our family! We were all strangers when we joined, and we add new people every single day. We all started as newbies, we all got to know each other because hell, we have a great group of people here! So let’s go back to the basics.

I hope you all join. Let’s get this thread to 1500 posts, like we did in the old days. Let’s welcome new members, and most of all, let’s reconnect. I miss all of you, that’s why I came back. There isn’t another site like AMHD on the Internet that I could find, and trust me, I looked. We’re unique. Let’s remind everyone why we are!

Are you game? I hope so!

Ok, I'm in... I like most of the people here and that's why I stay, so let's get this thread going.

So... what should we talk about?

My butt itches.

My butt itches.

I have a cream that may help with that. ;)

Glad you piped in. You're the first. I really should have arranged a prize for the first poster.

Hmmm... Ben, can we get a toaster to Odinn? Am I pushing it? Hell yes I am! ;)

Just so it's clear, a long time ago there was a rumor that members promoted to expert status would get a toaster. Well, I am toasterless, as is every person that's been promoted to expert! The toaster is a rumor! There is no toaster, and you all know me, I have to mention it every chance I get. So you, I'm bringing up the toaster. ;)

I don't really need the toaster as I am told that one should already be on the way since I hit 1,000 posts a few weeks ago. Though, now that I think about it, some members indicated that may be false as well.

I am going to start with my love and joy in the world... Gizmo!

A rescue dog who was a day away from being put down because of food aggression of all things. Six years later, and we are best friends. He has saved me from myself many times. All animal lovers know they can sense your moods.

He is a sweetie. The best medicine he dishes out? When he knows I'm down in the dumps and his usual interaction can't budge me, he gets up on the big pile of pillows and lays on top of my head, slowly sticking his head down the side of mine until I start petting him.

He finishes his prescription for happiness by rolling on his back and pawing me slowly until I rub his belly and start feeling better.

Ben! Ben! I want my toaster! ;)

I'm holding out for the hello kitty toaster. It toasts an image of hello kitty on your toast. How cool is that!

But, at this point I'd settle for this;

He's adorable Cliff. I've posted many pictures of my fur babies on this site. So many that if I post another, I fear that you all will just ban me. ;)

My soul dog was Indy. We put him to sleep a few months ago. It was necessary. He was 16, his health was failing, he couldn't stand without help. That doesn't make the decision easier though.

Our fur babies just don't live long enough.

Gizmo is adorable. You're lucky to have him in your life, and I'm sure he's very lucky to have you in his.

Animals are my saving grace. I can't live without them.

Now, about that toaster. ;)

Gizmo is a great name... I assume it's from the Gremlins movie? I had a cat years ago that we named Gremlin because of the movie.

Gizmo is adorable.

Alty, you know we love the pictures of all of the animals. By the way, how is weasel?

Well the mouse issue is down, even though I saw one in my bedroom last night. Gutsy little bugger, he was making a lot of noise, even after I threw something at him. I may have to set out a trap for him. Feed him to the weasel later. But the major issue is resolved, and I think it's thanks to Squishy, the weasel.

As for the weasel, it's never good when you name something. Even though I was adamant that this little intruder wouldn't become a pet, we gave him a name, we steer clear of him, the kids know he's a wild animal and dangerous, but still... I have a bad feeling about this. I feel like we may be going weasel cage shopping in the near future. But I am holding my ground. I just feel that the ground I'm standing on is more quick sand than anything else. :(

Darn animals. They always get into my cold hard heart. ;)

Hey! HeeeeeeeY! Over here waving my hand... crap Alty can't you see me either?!

Just spent two hours with an insurance agent. Wanted to get something for baby Jacob, well as expected it went to "are you sure that you are fully covered just in case the unexpected would happen????"

I am a salesman I know the tactics and the procedures! I have all the insurance that we need.

"Well then, let me go over this with you." No... I'm serious!

Short of bouncing her butt out of here I had to get rude (don't like to but... )

Any way, nothing purchased tonight. But she is going to call again this Thursday. I plan on being out of the country! :(

Alty... boy. It's the day we all dread with our pets. It was devastating last time I had to deal with it. What can you do but go on?

It's never easy. When Indy came into our lives (we met him a few short weeks after he was born), my thought was that we had all the time in the world, even if he only lived the estimated average of 12 years. But the time flew by way too fast.

But, we have great memories. He was my first baby. He was the first commitment my husband and I made to something other than ourselves, aside from the pets of our childhood. He was ours, our responsibility, our first child.

I miss him. I even miss the panting, having to get up a few times a night, carry him outside (he was a lab, not a light dog). I miss every part of him. But we do go on. Heck, for a lab he lived a long long life. Longer than most of his breed. Most of all, he had a great life, a family that loved him.

Sixteen years doesn't seem like enough to a mere human, but to a dog, that's forever and a day. I'm at peace with our decision. Doesn't make missing him easier though. :(

Canada is nice this time of year. Just saying, since you want to be out of the country. ;)

Stringer dear, a long time ago, when I had a career, before kids, I was an insurance underwriter. Of course I dealt with automobiles. To be specific, I dealt with the vehicles that could take out a small city. Oil rigs, welding trucks, anything that could go boom, and many of them did. One of my clients took out a small town once, at no fault of mine. It only cost around 10 million dollars. The policy holder hired a new guy, didn't tell us, let him drive an crude oil truck. Jerk didn't know an oil rig from a guinea pig, flipped the truck, took out a town. :(

As for life insurance and such, I don't know it from a goldfish. By the way, my goldfish, and his pall Fang, including the 20 gallon tank and stand, are still free to a good home. I'll deliver if you're in my area, or 20 miles out. :)

LMAO! Rod named him. Truth is, if it were up to Rod, Jared would have been named Fang. Because that wasn't an option, at least for me, I got Rod a fish, which we named Fang. Fang isn't even an inch long, he's a bottom feeder. In short, he eats the poo that Goldie the goldfish is famous for. ;)

Yay! So many of my friends on this thread. New chatters too, new friends! I love it! Hello to every one of you. You all were busy while I was working at my crap job for minimum wage. No, I'm not bitter. I'm actually pretty sweet! Sometimes. ;)

I don't know who to address first, so I'll just say hi to everyone, and then challenge all of you. We used to close chat threads down in less then a month. A thread is closed down at 1500 posts, for you new chatters. So, can we do it again? Can we show the owners why we're as great as we are? I think it's the community we created. So chat away. Anything goes. But, if one more person asks for the toaster, you realize I may be in big trouble, right? I can send you bread. That's about it. ;)

Seeing this thread come alive, seeing my old friends, new friends, people that never used to join the chats. Well, it's making me feel pretty darn great. Thank you all for joining in. Group hug!

NFL Fans: what do you think of the recent developments? Manning. Tebow. Saints. Looks like it could be an interesting season... (sorry Alty, you said anything goes)...

Let's see... I hate Manning. I understand that he is quite the princess and needs things his way. Got nothing against Tebow and I figure if he gets a decent QB coach, he will go far. And the SAINTS... They're my team. I've been a Saints fan since the early 90's. You know, back when the fans were wearing bags on their heads. I have a Jim Everett jersey from the early 90's when he QB'd for the Saints.

So they ran a "bounty"... big deal. Isn't football about hitting the guy with the ball anyway? Wait, no, that is rugby. Football is all about the cheerleaders! Yeah, that's it!

Oops. You all were talking football. Why did I think it was basketball? Oh, because I hate sports. That's why! ;)

So, instead of guys in shorts, it's guys in tight pants. I can live with that. :)

By the way, 8 pages in one day, that's nothing. Wait for it. We've been known to shut threads down in a week.

Odinn, we don't need tips, but thanks.

Just get Alty started on 'wt' (wrong thread) topics. ;)

Threads are automatically closed at 1,500 posts. At about 1,450, we start drawing straws to see who starts the next one and the count down until Ben stamps it 'closed'.

Kind of like closing time at the bar.

Woo-Hoo, I got my hand back, 4 weeks in a hard splint for a broken bone and my Dr. gave me the okay to take it off unless I am working or doing something that risks re-injury. Now I can wash dishes, scrub floors, clean bird cages. On second thought...
I wonder if canoeing counts as risky?

Have a good day, all.

Wouldn't count on Sneezy coming back. The kid is studying for finals right now. Last semester of med school before he goes out and practices what he learned. It's been a tough year for him. All he does is study. In fact, I'm worried about him. I know he's not sleeping, or eating. It's study study study. But maybe I could talk him into coming back for a while during his summer break. Both were on "GO". We weren't 'doing anything'. As long as we have three skins going, there will sometimes be these problems if you click on a link that has "go" in the URL. The system then switches you to the "GO" skin. Someday, it will no longer be an issue. Someday. :)

He's on protectants for now, but that's it. Happened 3 days ago apparently and the best he's done is vomit some up. They are small and smooth so we aren't worried about perforation or the like - but they are sitting at the bottom of the gut and not wanting to move into the intestine.

Why is it that a dog thinks they should swallow something just because they can?

Probably bad spelling too. Anyway, he's dog-tired, but can't breathe if I lay him down. Have the vaporizor started in his room, but in the meantime, I need to be holding him or he cries so miserably, which just stuffs him up more.

Thanks Alty for starting this thread - because its nice to relax around a campfire sometimes and share the stars together, but also because some of the members we've missed seem to have come back - if nothing else, just to say hi! It makes it more like a family reunion - if only for the weekend.

Alty/Sunny/et al. sorry for the mishaps with the skins - we really aren't doing anything on our end and as Cliff said it's an issue of straddling three different skins that the system sometimes gets a little messed up - we call them gremlins.

Is it OK to ask how people ended up with their usernames? Some are pretty straightforward like Alty or ScottGem but others like Synnen seems further a field... I'm rpray2007 because my name is Ram Prayaga (PLEASE NOTE: you don't have to name yourself - that's not my intention), and I signed up at some site (I forget which) in 2007 and almost arbitrarily went with rpray + year. It's stuck - sorry not very exciting I know.

I worked for a guy who signed up with AOL when he was a tween and wanted a cool name, but didn't know how to spell very well so ended up with the very cool 'Nigma.' By they way, this guy (in his mid-20s) is now in a monastery - great guy!

LadySam is a combination of 2 of the most wonderful pets anyone ever had.
Lady came along just about a year before the birth of my first child and gave us 15 years of unconditional love.
Sam or Sammy was a beagle that found us, he was a mess when we found him, but an absolute joy from day 1.
Since I posted in the pet boards it just seemed right.

I think we had a reason-for-username thread going a while ago, but haven't seen it for a few years.

On all other Q&A sites since 1998, I was CeeBee, my initials spelled out. When I registered for this site, I decided to consider my library background and years of wondering (about reference sources and yes, patrons), so I named myself Wondergirl. I would give anything to change it to CeeBee. Wondergirl sounds too much like Supergirl, and that I am not! I just wonder a lot.

Ram, it is perfectly acceptable to ask. Those who want, will answer. Those who don't won't.

I started using this name on AOL when I joined a chat room and have used it ever since. It is actually taken from me using my own advice. When I suggest writing down fantasies for your partner, it is from personal experience. Cat was a character and 1864 was a setting.

It is also permissible to ask what someone wishes to be called. If you prefer something other than Ram, let us know.

Also, welcome to AMHD. I hope you enjoy it here as much as I do. :D

Synnen is something of an inside joke. I'm a geek girl, but it took me a bit to like online games, though my husband played them. When he started playing Dark Age of Camelot, he chose the name Rolynd (from Brownings' poem). His brother visited us shortly after he started playing and was constantly singing that song "Rollin' with the Homies". When the hubby got a last name in the game, he chose Widahomeas. His brother rolled a character Kykyn Widahomeas, and several friends chose names to go with it as well--Rockyn, Ridyn, Mezzyn, Wafflestompyn, etc. They kept bugging me to play, and I said I would when I could think of a good name. Synnen (sinnin') came to me a few months later, and I've been some form of Synn online since (Synn, Synna, Synnamyn, Synnin, whatever). If you see the name in an online game, it's probably me.

I love kids that age... they are cute and fun but not mouthy like they get when they get closer to their teens. I wish my daughter was still seven.

So did Waffles get all the candles in one try?

Anyway, user names... I've had this name for years. I always liked Norse Mythology and Odin was a great "character" or "god" in all of that. I had a white Husky and named him Odinn because of this. I started using the name but then when he died, I made sure it is always a lower case "o" as a symbol of respect to my lost buddy. I'm not going to explain the number part of it as it probably won't make sense to anyone and you'll all just be sitting there like "wtf?"

How on earth did she get the nickname Waffles? She likes waffles??

kcomissiong
Mar 23, 2012, 07:24 PM
I usually end up calling the kids whatever has been on my mind at the moment, but she does actually like waffles. Waffles was from an episode of 2 and a half men, where charlie was the kids performer Charlie Waffles. It also rhymes with falafels, which I have also called her. Her pigtails look like falafel because her hair is so poufy. I've called her Beans, which came from calling her Trini Beanie. Buggy makes an appearance every now and then, but most of my nicknames seem to revolve around food!

Now my little boy has some really odd ones. One of my favorites is Mayor Mikey We. (Adam West episode of family guy, when he ran out of lite brite pieces). He also gets Mikeysaurus Rex, and my sister calls him Mikey Gadaffi because he was a miserable, albeit well dressed baby that terrorized the house for his first year.

I missed so much! Teach me to go to work! ;)

Okay, well Alty is pretty easy actually. My original username was Altenweg, my last name. No one could spell it, and it was way too long, so someone shortened it to Alty. I don't even remember who. Anyway, I too didn't think I'd stick around on this site, so I picked a name I knew I'd remember. A while back I begged to have it changed to Alty. I'm pretty sure I had to give up my first born to have it done, but seeing as he's a 13 year old boy, no one has come to collect him. :)

Nicknames for my kids. Well, Syd was "Boo" when she was little, because she looked like Boo from Monsters Inc. A friend started calling her that, and still does, but he's the only one that can get away with it now. Sneezy calls her Dimples, but, again, he's the only one that's allowed to call her that. I call her Syd, or Sydney bean.

When Jared was little I called him Mr Munch, because that kid ate everything he could get his hands on. Schatzie (sweetie in German), and now it's Jare bear (which he hates). Seeing as he's 13 now, and a typical teen, most times he's called brat, but usually not to his face. ;)

Hi all. So I'm in kitchen hell. Literally. Around 9 years ago we put laminate flooring in the kitchen over top of vinyl flooring. The vinyl was white with light gray diamonds on it (tiny diamonds), and it was discoloring. We have 2 huge windows in the kitchen, and the sun did it's thing. So we got laminate, covered it, and it looked great.

Well, recently we've been having issues with the dishwasher, and before that our fridge broke and flooded the kitchen. So the laminate was looking very rough. So Rod decided to rip up the laminate, clean the vinyl underneath, which we had hoped would be good enough until we can find something new, and until we can afford to get it.

Well, the vinyl is just as bad (worse) than I remember. Now, on top of the discoloring, we have mold from all the flooding, which we didn't even know was there. I'm a bit OCD, and the fact that we've been living with this mold for Dog knows how long, it's making me fidgety.

I'm cleaning the floors today. I'm going old school, on my hands and knees, bleach, a scrub brush, and then after that, a good floor cleaner. Right now the kitchen reeks! I can't even go in there without wanting to vomit.

So my question. Does anyone have any recommendations? Is bleach enough? Have I made things worse by ripping out the laminate and exposing the mold? Should I wear a mask while I'm cleaning this, or am I safe? Also, where can I get cheap flooring? We're thinking vinyl, because we've decided that a floating laminate floor is a bad idea in the kitchen.

Any suggestions?

I'm going to start a thread about this, but for now I wanted to ask my friends.

This is really driving me nuts. We can't leave it the way it is, even when it's clean. It's just hideous. :(

cdad
Mar 25, 2012, 01:29 PM
Mostly its going to depend on where the mold really is. If it is located on top of the flooring or where. If it saturated through it may also be underneath the flooring. If that is the case then everything should be ripped out and replaced. Some mold can be absolutely dangerous. It can be toxic. Be very careful.

Alty

Plywood.

Vinyl flooring is linoleum. One sheet, glued to the plywood. If we recover it with new vinyl then we'd probably have to put down another layer of plywood. I don't think we can put new lino over old. :(

Thanks Dad.

I don't think it saturated under the lino. So far it looks like it's just surface mold, but I really can't be sure without pulling up the lino, which is something I really don't want to do right now. If I did that we'd be left with plywood in the kitchen. And if the plywood is also moldy, we're screwed. We can't afford to replace both right now. Even though I'm pretty sure that's what we're in for.

This is a nightmare! I almost wish I had never agreed to pull up the laminate. Out of site, means I don't have to stress about it. But then, knowing the mold is there is a good thing, even though it's making me a bit crazy. Ok... crazy... er! ;)

If only we could afford that.

If we could then I'd be out hiring someone right now.

We're on a tight budget. The laminate needed to be pulled up, which is why we did it, but we were really hoping that we could at least live with the old vinyl for a few months, when we can afford to replace it.

But seeing the state it's in, the mold, which is only one of the issues, and knowing that it may not just be on the vinyl layer, but the plywood underneath as well?

Just shoot me.

We opened up a huge can of worms here. I wish I were still oblivious to it all. :(

friend4u178
Mar 25, 2012, 01:38 PM
Yep as Cdad says depends on the severity of the Mould , I'd be ripping all the old Vinyl up and hopefully be able to clean the mould in the plywood by sanding and sealing it.

Wondergirl
Mar 25, 2012, 01:42 PM
I'd go down to the wood and scrub off t he mold with bleach (while wearing a mask and gloves). We retiled our kitchen floor with 12x12 self-adhesive squares from Home Depot, something like this: Armstrong Flooring - Crandon - Brown Multi (http://www.armstrong.com/flooring/vinyl-tile/crandon-brown-multi-resilient-vinyl-tile-21166/floor-73722.asp). You'd have to put in something over the wood (the guys here will tell you what). The tiles haven't separated at the edges or bulged up or been any kind of problem so far.

Alty

Ouch. That's way more work than I had hoped for.

Plywood isn't too pricey, so I think we'll be ripping that up and replacing it, rather than trying to salvage it.

I also have to mention, we have a leak issue in the basement. I don't know what's leaking. Rod thinks it's the bathroom, but it's leaking into the laundry room, which is below the bathroom, and into the downstairs family room, which is below the kitchen. We have water stains on the ceiling, and there are times when I'm sitting her at my computer, right beside the water stains, where I can actually see the water dripping from the ceiling.

Maybe I should call a reality TV show. Mike Holmes? Anyone? This is a nightmare.

Worse, we want to sell this house and buy an acreage in the next year or so. As is, there's no way I can sell it. But, I also don't want to pour a lot of money into it since we plan on moving. I just want to make it right. Fix what needs to be fixed, but at this point I see a huge reno job that will cost us more than we can budget for, and frankly, if we have to spend that kind of money, we may be forced to stay here. :(

Not that it's not a nice house. It is. It's just too small for our family. We need more room, and we're tired of living in the burbs. We would like some land.

But right now, it's a fixer upper, even though we had it built new when we bought it.

Alty
Mar 25, 2012, 01:54 PM
Adhesive tiles were something I thought about, just for the time being, but they're not a permanent solution, especially if we want to sell in a year or two.

We have real tile. We have tons of it. In fact, we could re-tile our entire house 3 times if we wanted to. We helped demo a tile store a few years ago, and got to keep all the tile we took down. There was a lot, all in tact. We got slate, and many other nice tiles.

The thing is, I'm not really sure about tile in the kitchen. Yes, many people like it, but to me it's cold, too easily cracked, and a bugger to clean.

Still, we do have the tile. One of the tiles is gorgeous. Tan and brown marble. The long tile, and gorgeous. Rod does tile very well, but we'd still have to put new plywood down, and if we were considering tile, I'd probably look into a heated floor. So, more $$$$. :(

Heated floor in the kitchen??? I'd go with the bedroom, bathroom, and driveway first.

LOL! Not going to happen. Besides, we have laminate in the bedroom. Yes, we do have tile in the bathroom, which we're planning on redoing before we sell, but it's a small area, and let's face it, how much time do you actually spend in the bathroom?

The kitchen is the heart of the home. If I'm going to invest in heated flooring anywhere, especially if we decide to lay tile, then it will be in the kitchen.

:) I've been busy with school, self improvement (personal growth you know!), counseling, back with Rachel's father (things have been going awesome-- clearly some things here and there need to be improved but that's what therapy is for), umm working... that is pretty much it!

I just finished my placement and now I'm job hunting-- eesh it's tough out there!

But things are settling back down now that I'm not here there everywhere. I got a pup, I'm glad I waited, and I knew where to come for advice ;-)

How have you been? Anything new happening around these parts?

Anything new? Where oh where to begin! I'm so glad you're back and hope you'll stick around now. I read your Axel post, so we will be excited to see pictures.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! What a cutie pie!! I love the ears. And such a sweet little face and intelligence just zooming out of his eyes! How big is he now and how big will he get?

He should be about 13lbs now-- he was 12 lbs and a few ounces last week.

His mom is a Belgian Malinois:

And his father is a Blue Heeler (A.K.A. Australian Cattle Dog):

I wonder how the mating happened LOL

The vet says he should be between a large sized dog and a medium sized dog. Somewhere between 70-90lbs max.

He has some big paws on him so I'm guessing this is going to be a big boy.

He is very smart, he knows a few commands, sit, down, and stay with hand signals.

We have such a great bond already, I can't wait to grow old with this guy.

Here he is practicing sit and stay at the park.

I noticed his huge paws right away! I suspect you chose the pick of the litter (and he chose the perfect mom)! I really like his coloring too. Heck, maybe I'll give up my four cats and get a pup like Axel. (Pssst, don't tell my cats I said that.)

It's okay to take him out to the park? I'm thinking parvo. (I read the Dog threads, so I know that's a huge concern for young pups.)

He is super cute. Reminds me of my little mutt Sienna, with inverses colors... maybe she has some of his heritage...

My vet gave me the okay to take him out to the park. I don't let him meet strange dogs yet so I usually go when the park is empty or I go the other direction if I see a dog coming my way. He only has his first set, his second set is next week.

He's a very healthy boy. He did unfortunately have a case of worms which he had to get two doses of dewormer (he is now a o kay).

Parvo is something that does scare me because it can go from dog-dog dog-cat! I would lose two pets!

Keeping him on lockdown in my home wouldn't be a good idea-- most because he has that issue where he's scared of everything so the more people he meets the more he's coming out of his shell, the more sounds and cars and squirrels and birds he notices the more he's becoming confident. The first day it took me 15 minutes to just get him out of the house with the leash, now it takes me a few seconds and off we go!

The last thing I want is a dog with fear aggression-- YIKES!

All we can handle are fish. I'm not great with animals, but I have the sense to know it!
