I'm thinking of replacing my Mac Powerbook with an iMac desktop and using an iPad for portability.

If the iPad is equipped with WiFi it can. I believe most are.

Hi All. I just got an iPad and I have a related question... hoping someone has an answer for me...

I spend a lot of time in Hotels, and though most have internet in the rooms, not all have wireless, so my iPad is rendered kind of useless in that situation.

I tried connecting my laptop to the internet via the wired connection, and I shared it out. I then created a new Wireless Peer-to-Peer network I called "PatsHotSpot", and protected it with WEP.

I was able to connect to that hotspot from my iPad, add the WEP password, and it all looked good, except that when I tried to access the internet it keeps telling me there is no internet connection...

I seemed to have read something about iPads not working with shared internet connections. Is anyone out there able to get this exact situation replicated and working? If so, I'd love to know what I'm missing.

Thank-you

Be careful that you are not creating an ahock network that serves the same as a local network but dose not let internet access through. You need to bridge the connection from the wireless to the wired network to turn your laptop into an access point

Thanks cmeeks. I did that. I created a wireless network (peer to peer), gave it a unique name, and secured it with WEP. I then accessed the propoerties on my wired internet connection, and check the "share this connection" option, selecting "wireless" from the list of available connections.
Once I do that, the gap should be bridged.

I then see the wireless hotspot on my iPad, connect to it, put in the WEP Key, and booyah I'm done... well, not exactly. When I try to bring up Safari, or do anything that requires the internet, I get a message saying the internet is not active.

I have seen articles on how to set this up, followed them to a tee, but still I can't get it working. What I would like os for someone to tell me that they have done this with an actual iPad and that it works. That way, I will at least know I am not chasing rainbows.

Thank-you
