Hi,
The sears by my house is closing down and has a 90% of almost the entire store sale, I went with a friend and decided to buy a jacket and some shoe laces, I places the laces (60 cents) in my back pocket since my hands were full and ended up buying the 30 dollar jacket and walking out completely forgetting about the 60 laces,
As soon as LP approached me as I walked out I'd realized I accidentally shoplifted and cooperated fully. I'm 16 and they said they wouldn't call the police since the laces were only 60 cents, however I would receive a $50-$500 fine from the company. My dad refused to sign all paper work they handed, but did give them his license, they also gave him a form to sign confirming the fine I would receive which he also refused to sign. They then took it back and apologized since apparently the charge is only valid for items over $5, mine was 60 cents. They let me go, no signatures nada, and said I was good, no court etc. Can they still press charges? Can I Counter sue since they did try to make us sign a form for stolen items over $5 when the item was 60 cents?

Yes they may still press charges, in fact since your dad refused to sign or agree to any of the civil penalties, it is more likely to do so. Often that is the threat or pressure they use to get paid their fee.
