I live in CA and my father passed away in NY almost a year ago. A family relative claims that my fathers house was left to him, in trust, but has not produced any documents to verify this. How do I go about finding out if he legally owes it or if I do, as I am his only living child. Also, there is no wife or other children of the deceased.

You can check the title of the house through the county. You can also check to see if a will has been probated.

If not, then you file a claim for the estate in probate court where he lived.
